Popovy Dolls

tumblr_mg0mvy3kfc1rrihkmo1_500

The two amazing twin sisters Ekaterina and Elena Popova are the artist behind the interesting concept of Popovy Dolls. The twin sisters are very keen about portrait dolls and fashion and when they combined these two passions the Popovy Dolls were created.

The dolls are very life like but not in the terms of looking human. They look like beautiful and majestic creatures  from Venus who came down to Earth to explore our world.

The sisters are responsible for creating the dolls and their clothes. Every collection has its own theme like spiders, Egypt , lingerie  and is very detailed. Every doll is so unique and so detailed, that they can not be mistaken for anything else but  a tiny, beautiful pieces of art.

If you are a grown up barbie doll lover, like me, then these are the perfect dolls for you. Just remember that these dolls are not for playing.

Igor Baskakov

3406_b

Igor Baskakov is a Russian artist, who is really hard to track down. Never the less he has created some AMAZING art pieces. His style could easily be categorised as pop art. When looking at his work it is clear that he finds his inspiration in Soviet Union propaganda posters and Western advertising logos and brands. The outcome of all of that is a sinister outlook on the Soviet society with a hint of sarcasm.

Main colors that he uses are red, which obviously represent communism and blue and white. All together they form the three colors of the Russian flag. That doesn’t mean that he ignores all of the other colors of the spectrum but the ones he uses are bold and contrast each other.

The only website that I could find that displayed some of Baskakovs work is this. Even though its not the official website of the artist it offers the opportunity to purchase his work. So if you have a spare 3000 euros or more lying around you should visit the website but if you don’t you can always just look and drool all over some amazing art.

Tesla Boy

Tesla+Boy+interviewimagearticle

Don’t you sometimes just wish that now days music was different?

That it had a bit more meaning. That the songs  actually had lyrics and not just one  repeated sentence about sex.  Are you tired of musicians using dupstep in every song? Have you had those moments when you just wanted to cry how good the 80′s  music was?

Well my friend, I have a surprise for you – meet Tesla Boy.

A lovely band from Russia, that is heavily influenced by the 1980′s Western (UK and USA) music. They play a nice electro pop with a modern feel to it and their song are actually longer than 3 minutes which is very rare these days. Tesla Boy creates that kind of music that you could easily imagine playing in the 80′s cult movies like “The Breakfast Club”, “St. Elmo’s Fire” or even “Pretty in Pink”.  If you didn’t know that this band was only created in 2008, you could have easily thought they are from another century.

So to sum it up shortly, their music is really good and the Tesla Boy guys are very talented and if you suffer from nostalgia for the 80′s or you just like that kind of music you should check them out…. Even if you don’t like that kind of music you should still check them out.

Bohemique

tumblr_mjjdy2u6vk1r4ux3oo1_500

These days we see girls with messy hair wearing over sized T-shirts, ripped jeans and trainers basically everywhere – coffee shops, museums, theater and even night clubs, but not too long ago that wasn’t the case.

Girls were feminine and sensual. They wore clothes that showed off  their figures while not revealing too much skin. Cars stopped, men walked into lamp posts when they saw those wonderful and glamorous creatures.

The young Moscow based brand Bohemique  is bringing that kind of glamour back. Their clothes remind one of  Dior ,during Christian Dior times, but with more sex appeal. Every piece of every collection looks exactly like something that the fabulous Hollywood stars would wear in the glamorous 1950′s. Main inspiration behind every collection is lingerie, so if you are trying to seduce someone just wear one of their dresses. The designers behind this label know how to show off a woman’s body and create curves in all the right places.

In one way or another Bohemique collections, with its fetish vibe, resemble costumes of burlesque dancers and its easy to imagine Dita Von Teese wearing one of the pieces from this brand and looking even more fabulous than ever.

So if like me, you are tired of all the messy hair and over sized T-shirts, then check out this brand and get inspired to bring your inner Diva out for the whole world to see.

Also, is it just me or are capes (long dramatic ones) a new trend next season?

The Metro

kinopoisk.ru

The Metro is the latest action movie to come in Russia.

The plot of the movie is simple – people get stuck in a train (at a train station that is near a river). Most of the movie we (I would assume) see people trying to get out of the underground/metro but of course they will have to overcome different obstacles such as water (from the river) and broken cables. As you can imagine gallons of water pouring  from everywhere while you are trapped below the surface in a tiny space with loads of people is a challenge that not everyone will survive.

But wait… there is a love story there as well. Love, drama, tears and fear while trying to save yourself – well there’s something new.

To be fair I, personally haven’t seen it yet, so I can’t judge it but I can relate to it – I have to travel the London underground on daily basis and the thought of getting stuck there and perhaps even dying has crossed my mind on several occasions. That’s why I think it would be interesting to see how exactly do people escape the hellish metro in the film… or do they escape at all.

The movie is worth watching for its special effects and we are not just talking about the ones done digitally. Russia has previously produced one or two good action movies, that could be shown world wide but this is probably the best one so far.  I dare say that the production is at a Hollywood level.

In terms of the genre it resembles to such  movies like the Day after Tomorrow, Cloverfield and maybe even 2012 (IMDB doesn’t agree with me on that but that’s just my personal opinion ). So if you like to see good special effects, a story line that  we all have seen before and how the Moscow metro/underground looks like, then my friend I suggest you watch this movie. Its a great film  if you want to escape your everyday problems for a couple of hours.

The movie is already out in Russia, so it would be available on the internet soon but for those  who don’t speak Russian it will probably take a bit of time unitl there is a English subtitle version available.

Andrey Yakovlev

1968153

Andrey Yakovlev is a Russian photographer who is particularly hard to classify since you can’t really tell if he is doing a fashion editorial or trying to create an oil painting through his camera lens.

Unfortunately yours truly didn’t find any relevant information about the talented gentleman himself, but on the bright side , he doesn’t hide his work thus I managed to find a lot of his photos, so all of you could enjoy them.

If you think about it, perhaps its better if the photographer remains a mystery, it might even add a hint of fairy tale and magic to his work.

His ideas are never the same and there is not a single dull image – you can easily  imagine a story behind every one of them.  There are a lot of fashion photographers these days… what the heck, there a lot of photographers these days and a lot of them can take a decent picture and play around with the light but not a lot of them have the imagination to create something that will stand out or even something that doesn’t include a white background and a bright light.

Below you can see some of his work but for more stunning images click here.

Kätlin Haak – Interview

318236_10200677752175065_347260254_n

So this wonderful lady, that you can see smiling at you in the picture, is a young up and coming Estonian designer. She showcases her collections at different Estonian fashion events while studying at the Estonian Academy of Arts. There is always a story behind her collections and all of the pieces that she creates are beyond elegant. She deputed her latest collection ‘Mermaid’ on the 9th of March at MoeP.A.R.K – where she also won Peoples Choice Award for her collection.

Luckily for us, even though she is a busy bee Kätlin Haak managed to find some time to answer a couple of questions.

When did you realise that you wanted to work in the fashion industry?

Fashion has interested since my childhood, but I realised that I want to tie my life with it after 10th grade when me and my friend made our first ever collection.

How did you start your career?

To be honest I am just at the starting point of my career and I’m getting better and better everyday. Therefor I can answer this question more precisely in 10 years.

What inspires you? / How do you find your inspiration?

In most cases the inspiration just floats in the air and I just grab it. Thanks to school I learned to draw inspiration from my surroundings and I realised how important is the research before creating a collection.

What makes you different from other designers?

I love theater and shows. I was born into a family where theater, cabaret and ballet are inevitable and growing up and living my whole life in that environment gives me a huge advantage over other designers. I have an extreme connection with that world and want to link myself to it as strongly as possible.

What are you currently working on?

At the moment I am creating completely independent collection “Mermaid” and at the same time working on my school stuff – and even there we (Kätlin and her course mates) have a couple of collections coming up.

What are your plans for the future?

First of all I want to finish school and do a work placement abroad, then I want to open my own studio and just give my best. I don’t rule out the possibility that I might become a theater costume designer instead – why not?

What do you think about the fashion industry in Estonia/ Russia and how they influence each other?

The fashion industry in Estonia is constantly evolving upward (?). We have some amazing designers, that we could be proud of and some of them have evolved so far as to showcasing their collections abroad, which is more than just great because Estonia is such a small country. Lately Russian fashion industry has definitely influenced Estonian designers creations.

Do you have any idols? People you aspire to be?

A huge idol of mine is my mother. She is just so inspirational, that there is no one else like her in the world. My recent favourites are Ulyana Sergeenko – who is just a fantastic designer and Anna del Russo, whose fashion sense everyone can wish for.
